I saw this post on Huskerpedia, thought it was on point.
I'm really getting sick of people criticizing Bill Callahan's ball-control, run-oriented offense as "conservative".
There was such a hue and cry when this strange new fancy passing offense was coming to town and how it was going to destroy the tradition of "Nebraska" Football. Now, when we are finally RUNNING THE BALL effectively, people are complaining because we aren't throwing the ball downfield 80 times a game.
Is this a lack of understanding of what a "West Coast Offense" is by the majority of the fanbase, or a misunderstanding of what "Nebraska" football is all about?I'm seeing our coaching staff attacking teams with a potent running game, a balanced controlled, efficient passing game, emphasizing ball control, field position, and time of possession. This is EXACTLY what we did under Tom Osborne for 2 decades, except we now have a QB throwing the ball rather than running it.
I just don't understand why there is so much arguing going on AGAINST the re-establishment of our very history and tradition of pounding the ball right at teams until they submit to our will.Either we have a "new" type of fan in the fanbase that doesn't GET IT, or we have a segment of the fanbase that refuses to understand what the WCO is and how it is used to win football games. It's clear to me that Callahan understands what "NEBRASKA" football means. He's showing us this year. His offense this year reminds me more of what we "used to do" than we have seen for some time now.
If you want a "sexy" 60 pass a game offense, go watch somebody else like Texas Tech. I wanted to see NEBRASKA football under this staff. I saw "Nebraska" football for the last time on the field against Michigan State in the Alamo Bowl at the end of the 2003 season. I saw it re-emerge again against Michigan in the Alamo Bowl at the end of last season and take off this year. We have had two games with 2 100 yard rushers. We've had four I-backs have 100 yard games so far this year. We've risen to the top ten in both rushing AND passing and to the top of our conference in both.We are seeing "Nebraska" foootball as we've always seen it in the past.
Why are some of you so upset that we are running the ball to win football games? Why is that such a foreign concept to you?
